Do AI characters remember you between chats?

The short answer

It depends on the app and its settings. On Written People, yes: what you tell a person stays with them across new chats until you reset it or delete your account.

They can still get details wrong. There is no list of what they remember for you to open; the site says you can ask us to show it, or clear it yourself with Reset.

What "remembering" means here

Apps differ. Some keep nothing between chats, some let you pin things, some keep notes on their own, and many have a setting for it. If you want to know what one app does, try it: tell it something small, then start a new chat a few days later and see.

On Written People (a site of AI characters, which we call people), what you tell a person is kept for you and that person. It is not tied to one chat.

What they keep are facts you tell them. The Privacy page gives the example: "Characters remember facts you tell them, such as your dog's name" (Privacy Policy). The About page calls it memory "kept for the two of you", and says it "does not reset between conversations" (About). Each person's page says "They remember what you tell them, across weeks" (Kabir Das's page), and the Pricing page lists "Memory that compounds across weeks" (Pricing).

You can see it when you start over. Press New chat and the transcript is empty, but while it is still empty the page can say, for example, "New chat. Kabir still remembers you."

There is no list you can open of what a person remembers about you. We left it out on purpose. Settings, under Safety, says how to see it instead: "To see exactly what is held, ask us." The AI Disclosure page makes the same offer: "Ask us and we will show you exactly what is stored about you, or delete it." (AI Disclosure, item 04)

What they can get wrong

Remembering is not the same as getting it right. A person can mix up a detail, miss something you told them, or say something that does not fit what they said before. Our AI Disclosure page puts it plainly: "Generated text can be inaccurate or inconsistent, and characters can contradict their own canon." (AI Disclosure, item 06)

Every reply has a small Report link, and "Wrong or misleading" is one of the reasons you can pick. The same page goes on: "Report it and we will tighten the character."

We do not promise that a person will bring up a given thing you said, or when.

Starting over: New chat, Past chats, Reset

On the website, the chat page has a menu beside the message box: a button with three dots. It holds three things.

New chat. It appears once you have written something in the chat you are in. It puts that chat away and opens an empty one. Nothing is deleted. The person still remembers you, and anything they promised you still stands.

Past chats. Once you have more than one chat with a person, this lists them: the day each one started, its last words and how many messages it has. Press one to bring it back and carry on from there.

Reset everything with [Name]. This is the one that deletes. A box opens, marked "CANNOT BE UNDONE", and lists what goes "for good":

  • every chat you have had with that person, not only the open one
  • "everything [Name] remembers about you"
  • "how well you know each other, and how you like to talk"
  • "anything [Name] promised to send you"

You type YES to confirm. The box also says what stays: "Your tokens, transactions and photos you unlocked stay." Reset covers only that one person; your chats with everyone else are untouched. Afterwards you start again with one empty chat.

Reset is not "delete everything". It does not touch the records of what you bought, and a Report you filed about a reply stays on file with its own copy of the words. Only deleting your account removes those reports.

There is no way on the website to delete a single chat or a single message. Old chats stay readable in Past chats until you Reset or delete your account.

Here is what each one does, side by side:

What happens to... New chat Reset (type YES) Delete your account
The chat you are in put away, still in Past chats deleted deleted
Your other chats with that person kept deleted deleted
What they remember about you kept deleted deleted
How well you know each other kept deleted deleted
Anything they promised you kept deleted deleted
Tokens and photos you unlocked kept kept go with the account; unused tokens are not refunded
Reports you filed kept kept removed
Your chats with other people untouched untouched deleted

If you delete your account

You do it in Settings, under Safety, with your password and the word DELETE. The page says this "removes your account, every conversation, and everything characters remember about you", that unused tokens are not refunded, and that it cannot be undone.

The Privacy Policy says the same: "When you delete your account, we delete it together with your conversations and everything characters remember about you." It adds that a few copies, such as server logs, monitoring copies and images made in your conversations, are not yet removed automatically, and that we will delete them if you ask (Privacy Policy, section 7).

Will they message me first?

Only to keep a promise. The AI Disclosure page: "Today a character messages you on their own only to keep a promise: if they said they would send you something, such as a poem they were writing, they send it once it is ready." It goes on: "That is software following set rules, not someone thinking of you." (AI Disclosure, item 03)

There is a switch for this in Settings, under Signals. It is on until you turn it off. A Reset also cancels any promise that is still open, so nothing is sent for it.

Where we could still be wrong

  • Dates. We checked all of this on 15 October 2026, against the website as it was that day and the legal pages as updated on 14 October 2026. Features change. If a legal page and this article disagree, the legal page wins.
  • Screens we quote from the site's own text. The menu, the Reset box, the Settings text and the "still remembers you" line are quoted from the words the site is built with. We did not take a screenshot of each one for this article.
  • How often they bring things up. We have no count of how often a person raises something you told them without being asked. We make no promise about it.
  • Copies outside the chat. The copies the Privacy Policy lists, such as server logs, are not removed by Reset either, as far as we found. The offer to delete them on request applies there too.
  • How long it is kept. We found no expiry in what we checked, but we did not check every part of the system, so we do not promise a length of time.
  • Asking us. We have not tested how long a request to see what is stored takes.
  • Settings behind the screens. Our description of messages matches the AI Disclosure page; we could not see every production setting.
  • The apps. This article is about the website only.

MYTH OR FACT

Why did Kabir go to Magahar to die?

The oldest texts do not say why Kabir went to Magahar. His own songs place his death there and call it equal to Kashi; the donkey line comes later.
