THEIR WORDS

Did Vivekananda say "Talk to yourself at least once a day"?

The short answer

Not that we can find. We searched his nine-volume Complete Works, in two full-text copies and ten scans of single volumes, and found no such line. None of the copies we found names a lecture, a letter or a volume.

The line usually reads: "Talk to yourself at least once in a day. Otherwise you may miss a meeting with an excellent person in this world." The earliest copy we found is dated February 2015. The Government of India's Vedic Heritage portal has listed it among his quotes since at least July 2019, without a source.

Where it is printed

The line is shared as the words of Swami Vivekananda (स्वामी विवेकानंद). These are the dated copies we found, oldest first. None gives a source.

  • 17 February 2015. An exam guide, Bank Exam Pedia: Feb 2015, prints it on p. 14 (Google Books, p. 14). We saw a snippet only. It is the earliest dated copy we found.
  • 10 March 2015. A personal blog post credited to him (post).
  • 2016. Goodreads, member-added and unchecked, with likes from January 2016 (Goodreads). AZQuotes has it too, archived from July 2016 (AZQuotes).
  • May 2019. The book Life is a Game of Cricket, p. 4 (Google Books, p. 4).
  • By 21 July 2019. The Government of India's Vedic Heritage portal lists it among 18 quotes by him (page; capture of 21 July 2019). The Vedic verses on that page carry references; this line carries only his name.
  • 26 April 2026. Zee News ran it as a quote of the day, with "an intelligent person" in place of "an excellent person" (Zee News).

The "excellent person" sentence is not a later addition. It is the second half of the same quote, and the 2015 exam guide already has both.

What we searched

His lectures, letters and writings, with translations of his Bengali pieces, fill the nine volumes of The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda. We searched:

  • Two full-text copies of all nine volumes on archive.org (copy A, copy B).
  • Ten scans of single volumes, from several printings. Their text is machine-read, so a misread word could hide a line.
  • Wikisource, a free transcription, through its own search.

We looked for "talk to yourself", "once in a day", "miss a meeting" and "excellent person", among other forms. None is in his works. Wikisource's 28 pages with "talk to yourself" are all by other writers.

As a control, the same searches find his known lines, such as "Strength is life, weakness is death" and "Take up one idea".

English Wikiquote's page on him does not carry it (Wikiquote), and we found no one else credited with it.

An independent list of quotes falsely attributed to him, with no author named, includes it (list). We found no statement on this line from the Ramakrishna Math and Mission; its Awake portal page on false quotes lists none (Awake).

The same search, run on seven of his most shared lines. The free texts have no print page numbers, so we give volume and title.

Popular line What his works show Where
"Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached." His English rendering of a Sanskrit line from the Katha Upanishad, "उत्तिष्ठत जाग्रत प्राप्य वरान्निबोधत". Vol. 3, "The Mission of the Vedanta"
"Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life..." His, trimmed. Shared copies stop at "This is the way to success"; the text goes on "and this is the way great spiritual giants are produced." Vol. 1, Raja-Yoga, "Pratyahara and Dharana"
"You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself." Item 6 of a numbered list of sayings that gives no source for any item. In a London lecture of 1896: "He is an atheist who does not believe in himself." Vol. 5, "Sayings and Utterances"; Vol. 2, "Practical Vedanta, Part I"
"Strength is life, weakness is death." His, mid-sentence, 1900: "This is the great fact: strength is life, weakness is death." Vol. 2, "Work and its Secret"
"In a conflict between the heart and the brain, follow your heart." A lecture has "When there is conflict between the heart and the brain, let the heart be followed". The short form is in notes of his class talks. Vol. 1, "Steps to Realisation"; Vol. 8, "The Religion of Love"
"They alone live who live for others." His, trimmed, from a letter of 1894: "they alone live who live for others, the rest are more dead than alive." Vol. 4, "Our Duty to the Masses"
"Give me a hundred energetic young men and I shall transform India." Not there in that form. Behind it: "A hundred such and the world becomes revolutionized" (a Madras lecture), and a letter of 1894 about "one hundred such men over India". Vol. 3, "My Plan of Campaign"; the letter: Vol. 5, XXV, to Alasinga (copy A)
"Talk to yourself at least once in a day..." Not found; no copy names a source. See above

Five of the seven are his words, often trimmed. One sits in an unsourced list. One is not there in that form, though genuine lines stand behind it.

How to tell

Our working rule, drawn from this search, not from any authority:

  • A neat, balanced one-liner in modern words ("an excellent person in this world") with no lecture, letter or volume behind it is a warning sign.
  • His genuine lines come with a place: a lecture, a letter, class notes. Many shared ones are cut from longer sentences.
  • The check is free. The Complete Works are online in full; search an exact phrase of four or five words. A line found only on quote sites has not been traced.

Looking inward is a theme he spoke about, as in "He is an atheist who does not believe in himself" (Practical Vedanta, Part I). That does not make this sentence his.

What is documented, and what is still open

Documented: the Vedic Heritage portal printed the line as his by 21 July 2019, with no source. The earliest dated copies we found, from February and March 2015, give none either. Two full-text copies of the Complete Works, ten single-volume scans and Wikisource's search do not contain it; the same searches find his genuine lines.

Still open:

  • Older copies. We could not search old email forwards, early social networks or newspapers. An earlier copy may exist.
  • A Bengali source. We searched English text only, so a Bengali origin cannot be ruled out.
  • The portal's source. We have not asked the portal's editors where they found the line.
  • The "intelligent person" version. We saw it only on 2026 pages; where it began is unknown.
  • What was never written down. Much of what he said aloud was never recorded. A search shows only that we found no record.

MYTH OR FACT

Why did Kabir go to Magahar to die?

The oldest texts do not say why Kabir went to Magahar. His own songs place his death there and call it equal to Kashi; the donkey line comes later.
