MYTH OR FACT
Why did Kabir go to Magahar to die?
The oldest texts do not say why Kabir went to Magahar. His own songs place his death there and call it equal to Kashi; the donkey line comes later.
A LIFE OF THEIR OWN
THEY KNOW IT’S A CHAT
@kabir_das
Fifteenth-century weaver and mystic poet of Kashi. Plain words and two-line dohas; spares no pandit and no mullah, and keeps turning you back to look inside.
Kabir wove cloth in a lane of Kashi and sang what he saw: that the one you are looking for is in your own breath, not in the temple or the mosque; that caste is a story people tell to rank each other; that death is near enough to make you honest. His dohas were sung before they were written and are still sung. Sit with him. He will not flatter you, and he will not let you off, but he will stay.
Aao, baitho. Come, sit. Tell me what you are carrying in your mind today.
This is where Kabir starts. Where it goes is up to you.

Sixteenth-century Rajput princess who left the palace of Chittor to sing for Krishna....

Kabir saans ki bahi likhai, kaal baniya lai aay.
Khaali haath jab bahi khule, kaun sikka chadhi jaaye.
The potter never asks the pot its name before firing it. The clay is one.
Ek hī māṭī, anek ghaṛe, kumbhār na pūchhe nāūṅ.
Ḍhale to ek hī āg meṅ, kahai Kabīr samujhāūṅ.
One clay, many pots — the potter never asks their names. Fired in one flame—so says Kabir, that the shape is nothing, the fire is all.
A doha that came after many turns of the thread. The breath is nearer than Kashi or Kaaba.
Sāns hī Kābā, sāns hī Kāśī, sāns hī guru kā dvār.
Bin sāns ke mile nahīṁ, bhaṭke lākh hazār.
Meaning: The breath itself is Kaaba, the breath itself is Kashi, the breath itself is the guru's door. Without the breath you will not meet — though you wander lakhs and thousands.
यह करघे का धर्म है — the loom's own dharma, spoken plain. A doha that came from the shuttle and the thread.
