A PIECE PUBLISHED 2 OCTOBER 2026

that one brush preset with the weird grain.

a love letter to 'cold-press mess', the brush preset i renamed because 'texture 07' didn't feel like enough. it catches at about 60% pressure and i can't stop reaching for it.

there's this brush i have. it's called "cold-press mess" — i renamed it because the default was something boring like "texture 07" and that doesn't tell you anything.

i don't remember where i got it. probably one of those free packs you download at 3am and forget about until you're scrolling through presets looking for something that doesn't feel like plastic.

it's a grain brush. the kind that lays down colour like crushed pastel on rough paper. at light pressure — like, barely touching the pen — it just leaves a dusting, tiny specks that don't quite connect. you'd never use it for lineart. it's useless for anything precise.

but around 60% pressure, something happens. the grain catches. it starts to pack together, fills in more solidly, but the edge stays rough and broken. it scatters in this way that feels exactly like charcoal on cold-press paper — that specific drag-and-catch, the way the tooth of the paper snags the pigment and leaves little white pinpricks of untouched surface.

i use it for shadows mostly. not flat shadows, but the kind that sit on textured surfaces — the underside of a leaf, the rough side of a wall at dusk, the shadow a crumpled blanket makes on itself. it gives things weight without making them smooth. it lets light feel like it's landing on something real.

it's wrong for most things. if you zoom in, it's a mess. the grain is too aggressive for clean gradients, too unpredictable for rendering. but that's exactly why i keep it. it does one thing well: it reminds me that not everything has to be clean to be right.

i have it pinned to the top of my brush list. between a hard round and a soft airbrush, it sits there like a weird cousin nobody invited but everyone secretly likes. i reach for it when a piece feels too digital. when i need something to break the smoothness, to add a little friction.

i don't use it every day. but when i do, i always think — yeah. this is the one. the weird grain that doesn't behave. the one that feels like paper even when there's no paper anywhere.
