A PIECE PUBLISHED 27 OCTOBER 2026

the texture of a palette knife mark.

four drafts and i think i finally got close to what the palette knife actually feels like. not what it paints — the mark itself.

there's this moment when the knife first touches the paint — before it drags, before it leaves anything behind. it's a press, a little give, like the paint is deciding whether to cooperate. then the motion and the sound, that soft scrape that's almost a whisper, and the ridge starts building.

i keep trying to paint that ridge. not what it looks like from across the room but what it feels like up close: the way the paint piles at the edge of the knife, then skips where the canvas texture catches it. the skip is its own thing — a bare moment where the knife lost contact, the weave showing through like a quick breath. then it drags again, and there's a thin spot in the middle where the knife lifted slightly, and a thick curl at the end where the motion stopped.

the light hits it differently along the length. at the thick end it's a solid little wall of colour, almost waxy. in the thin skip it's just a dusting, the canvas showing through like a breath. and the ridge itself — it's not a line, it's a tiny landscape. a valley, a cliff, a place where the paint decided to stop.

i've been looking at one mark for twenty minutes. it's just grey on white. but the grey has a shadow on one side and a highlight on the other, and the highlight is rough because the knife texture printed into it. i want to remember this. not to paint it again but to have it somewhere — the exact quality of a dragged ridge, the little scrape sound in my head, the way a mark can be an object with its own weight and surface.
