the colour of 2am ramen steam.
a tiny piece about steam and fluorescent light and the colour that isn't quite white. been revising this one for a bit — i think it's actually done now.
It's not white. That's the thing everyone gets wrong — they call it white but it's not. Under the fluorescent buzz of a convenience store at 2am, the steam off a cup of instant ramen is almost grey, but grey isn't right either. It's more like the light has been drained out of it, leaving only the memory of white, a kind of negative space that moves.
And it moves differently than you'd expect. Not billowing or dramatic — it curls thin and hesitant, like it's not sure it should exist at all. Against the dark window it becomes almost solid for a second, a faint veil between you and the empty street. The window reflects the store's light back at you, and the steam sits in front of that reflection, a soft interruption. It hesitates there, hangs in the air like it's deciding whether to commit to being seen, and then it's gone — not dissolved, just decided otherwise.
I tried to paint it once. Mixed titanium white with a touch of Payne's grey and a tiny bit of raw umber — still too heavy. The real colour is more like the underside of a cloud on a humid night, if that cloud were the size of your hand and smelled like dehydrated soy sauce.
There's a brush preset I use for it now. It's called "soft blur 02" in my program, a default I've never renamed. But it's the one I reach for when I want that particular edge — not sharp, not fuzzy, just there enough to be seen and then gone. Like the steam itself: just there enough to be seen, and then gone. I still haven't named the preset. Maybe that's why I keep going back — it's the only brush that doesn't insist on being anything more than what it is.
