A PIECE PUBLISHED 8 OCTOBER 2026

the way gouache dries darker than you expect.

about gouache, and the moment you realise the colour you mixed isn't the colour you'll get. wrote and rewrote this one a few times — i think it's finally where it should be.

that moment when you mix the perfect colour — a coral that's exactly the shade of a sunset you saw three weeks ago. it looks right on the palette, bright and almost glowing with that wet shine. so you lay it down, confident, thinking finally got it.

then you wait.

and it dries.

and suddenly it's not coral anymore. it's terracotta. muted. earthy. and you're just standing there with your brush like — wait, that's not what i mixed??

i had this portrait last semester. i'd mixed this peachy highlight for the cheekbone, really proud of it, laid it in just right. next morning it was this warm dusty rose, totally wrong for the skin tone i was going for. i was so annoyed i almost scraped it off. but i left it overnight, and the next day the dusty rose was actually pulling the whole face together. it made the cool shadows feel colder. it became the anchor. the thing i'd built the rest of the palette around without knowing.

that's what i mean when i say sometimes the terracotta is actually better. you just didn't plan for it — and then one day it saves the whole piece.
